Stump Removal FAQ
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
The trunk will not. Grinding below grade removes the growth points, so the stump itself is finished. A few species, willow and poplar especially, can push suckers from leftover lateral roots for a season. Mowing those shoots as they appear exhausts the roots and ends it.
What happens to the wood chips?
Grinding leaves a mound of chips and soil. We can haul it away or leave it if you want free mulch for beds. If you intend to reseed the spot, we recommend hauling the chips out and backfilling with topsoil, since fresh chips pull nitrogen from the soil as they break down.
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding shaves the stump below ground and leaves the root system to decay naturally. Removal extracts the stump and major roots, which leaves a large hole and disturbs much more of the yard. Grinding is faster and cheaper, and it is the right choice for most properties.
